HEAD AND NECK CANCER
The Department of Radiation Oncology offers state-of-the-art radiation therapy with emphasis on quality and precision to deliver the exact radiation dose to a defined disease area, using Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) along with Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) for head and neck tumors. Another treatment offered for localized and/or recurrent disease is low-dose or high-dose brachytherapy, in which radioactive seeds are temporarily inserted into the involved area.
At Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, treatment for head and neck cancer involves a multidisciplinary approach including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. UHealth specialists in otolaryngology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology meet weekly to discuss the best approach for each head and neck cancer patient.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is a pioneer in accelerated hyperfractionation with and without chemotherapy. This technique enhances the killing effect of radiation in locally advanced cancers. The physicians have extensive experience in using the technique for recurrent cancers that were initially treated with radiation therapy.
Our department offers also national and institutional trials to enhance the quality of care provided to our patients and allow them to benefit from the latest discoveries in research. Doctors responsible for treating head and neck tumors are Georges F. Hatoum, Janet Sperry, and Arnold Markoe.
