EVALUATION
The program director evaluates the residents’ performance and informs them of their progress. Residents are evaluated after each two months rotation, and the program director reviews these reports with each resident. Residents have the opportunity to appeal their evaluations verbally or in writing. The residents also evaluate the program and faculty each semester to provide a feedback mechanism for modifications and improvements.
Residents are graded in didactic classes (without credit) as if they were University of Miami medical students. They also use self-evaluation programs to determine clinical proficiency and are expected to maintain a minimum 70 percent performance in each didactic class.
The strict evaluation of a resident’s progress is meant to assure that advancement is consistent with program objectives. If the resident shows inadequate progress, he or she will be advised of the steps necessary to achieve the objectives. Contracts last one year, starting on July 1. In the event that inadequate progress continues to be made, the resident’s contract may be terminated. Residents who receive no notice of termination by December 31 may assume that their contracts will be renewed for another year by June 30.
Residents also have periodic objective examinations in radiation biology, radiation physics and clinical oncology. Any resident failing to obtain at least a 70 percent score on any exam is subject to academic counseling and remediation. If a resident continues to achieve less than 70 percent on any subsequent examination, he or she is subject to academic probation and further counseling with remediation. If the resident still scores below 70 percent in the area of deficiency after all the above steps have been taken, the resident is subject to contract non-renewal.
