Types of Research
Research in the Lab
Before new cancer treatments can be approved for clinical use, preliminary studies must be performed in the laboratory. Radiation Oncology boasts a modern research facility, housing powerful, sophisticated equipment capable of examining cancer cells at the molecular level. Researchers, under the direction of Dr. Alan Pollack, Chairman of Radiation Oncology, perform innovative experiments designed to answer an array of scientific questions about cancer. Accomplished scientists, proficient in the latest lab techniques, focus their investigations on topics such as:
- The tumor-killing effects of radiation when dosage is increased or decreased.
- The role of biomarkers (e.g. DNA) in identifying how well patients will respond to treatment .
- The interaction between experimental drugs and radiation to enhance treatment effects.
Clinical Research Protocols
Many of our physicians conduct clinical research to determine the effectiveness of new medicines and medical devices. Eligible patients may enroll in these studies, which are designed to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment options. The wide range of clinical trials offered at Sylvester reflects not only the breadth of experience but the wealth of knowledge our research teams bring to the clinic. Below are just a few examples of the kinds of research studies carried out in the Department of Radiation Oncology:
- Combining new chemotherapy regimens with radiation to improve treatment outcome.
- Stereotactic radiosurgery for prostate cancer and brain cancer.
- Brachytherapy (implants) for cancer of the eye and prostate cancer.
- Incorporating multimodal imaging for precise targeting of the tumor with high dose radiation.
Find a Radiation Oncology Clinical Trial
Sylvester maintains a list of clinical trials conducted by our radiation oncologists. You may also search for open studies using the Sylvester Clinical Trials Matching Service. More information about these resources can be found at: Clinical Trials.
Radiation oncology practitioners and staff are available to answer your questions about clinical trials. A Sylvester representative at 305-324-4200 will direct your call to the appropriate cancer specialist who can provide additional information about participating in research studies.
