Lung Cancer

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating lung cancer. Our team of lung cancer specialists includes thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, and radiation oncologists. This highly specialized team works together to optimize treatment plans for every patient.

The Department of Radiation Oncology not only has physicians who specialize in treating lung cancer, but it also offers state-of-the-art technology.

During the treatment planning process, initial imaging tests include advanced PET/CT scans and 4D CT scans. This technology allows us to watch tumors move as a patient breathes so that we can deliver radiation with pinpoint accuracy. Our radiation delivery systems include Rapid Arc® with cone beam CT imaging and respiratory gating, which enables us to turn the radiation beam on and off as the tumor moves during breathing.

For cases in which small volumes of the airways need to be treated, Sylvester offers the latest in high-dose-rate brachytherapy for tumors in the bronchi and bronchial tree. This is a highly effective way to treat these tumors that may be blocking the airways and causing breathing problems. The Nucletron Oncura® system allows us to deliver the radiation from the inside, minimizing the amount of radiation to surrounding healthy lung tissue.
Sylvester’s lung radiation oncology team is led by Adrian Ishkanian, M.D. and Laura Freedman, M.D., who heads the Radiation Oncology Center at Sylvester at Deerfield Beach.
