Head & Neck Cancer

At the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, we take a truly multidisciplinary approach to head and neck cancer treatment. Decisions regarding management of all patients are made cooperativelye by a team of experienced physicians who specialize in head and neck tumors. Our team is comprised of head and neck surgeons, specialized radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, specialized diagnostic radiologists, speech pathologists, dieticians, audiologists and pathologists, all of whom are dedicated to the treatment of head and neck tumors. The team meets on regular basis to discuss the optimal management of each individual patient.

The Department of Radiation Oncology offers state-of-the-art radiation therapy with emphasis on quality and precision of treatment delivery. Patients are seen in a multi-disciplinary clinic with all specialties working side-by-side in space dedicated to this disease. The department offers sophisticated radiation planning and delivery systems and is accredited by the American College of Radiology. Our physicians have a national and international reputation and are recognized as a resource for management of head and neck cancers for referring physicians in Florida and Latin America.

Several different technologies are available, including:

  • Intensity modulated arc therapy (RapidArc® IMAT), which provides highly conformal radiation treatment with shorter daily treatment times than is possible with typical intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques
  • Daily image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) helps ensure precise delivery of radiation treatment
  • Cone beam CT that is as a standard to ensure accuracy of daily treatment delivery
  • High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy implants
  • Image fusion techniques with 3T MRI and PET CT to allow for optimal targeting of tumors
  • Gamma Knife radiosurgery for skull base tumors

Sylvester offers access to a broad variety of clinical trials which allow patients to receive treatment with cutting-edge therapies before they are widely available. Additionally, the Department of Radiation Oncology has a special interest and extensive experience in treating patients with recurrent cases of head and neck cancer, even when previously treated with radiation therapy. Sylvester also offers a comprehensive survivorship program and clinic for head and neck cancer patients with the goal of helping them to achieve the best possible quality of life during and after treatment.

Sylvester’s radiation oncology team sees one of the highest volumes of head and neck cancer cases in the nation. The doctors responsible for treating these patients are Michael Samuels, M.D., Nagy Elsayyad, M.D., Matthew Abramowitz, M.D., and Laura Freedman, M.D., Dr. Freedman directs the Radiation Oncology Center at Sylvester at Deerfield Beach.
