Physics Residency Program Overview

Clinical Rotations – Two year residency is divided into 8 rotations, during which the residents will go through different clinical specialty areas under the supervision of rotation-specific mentors. In addition, the residents are assigned a specific faculty adviser throughout the residency. The clinical rotations include 3D CRT Planning and Dosimetry, Intensity modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Imaging for Radiation Therapy and IGRT, Low Dose rate (LDR) and High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Radiotherapy, Radiation Dosimetry Measurements, Quality Assurance, Linear Accelerator Acceptance Testing, Commissioning, and Treatment Planning System Beam Modeling, Radiation Shielding and Protection, Special Procedures, including Total Skin Electron (TSE) and Total Body Irradiation (TBI). In addition, the residents will opportunity work on clinical developmental projects during the residency

Didactic Training – The residents are required to attend all weekly departmental conferences, clinical lecture series, new patient conferences, Medical Physics weekly journal club, departmental in-service training, didactic lectures and assigned readings.

Training Sites – The residents will be trained at the University of Miami Sylvester Cancer Center Main, Sylvester Cancer Center West and Sylvester Cancer Center Deerfield Beach facilities.

Number of Residents – The program admits one resident each year. The goal is to have one first-year resident and one second-year resident in the program each year. One position is available starting July 1 of each year.

Benefits – The department provides each resident a specific yearly allowance for educational expenses that can be used for books and other educational materials or attending to the meetings. The residents are allowed to take four weeks of vacation time and two weeks of sick time per academic year. The vacation time may not exceed more than two consecutive weeks. In addition, comprehensive medical and dental insurance is offered. Parking is also available in multiple on-campus parking garages.
